Magic Pot, a weekly English magazine from the house of the reputed Indian publishers, Malayala Maonrama is certainly a good choice to educate and entertain kids below 10 years. I have been buying Magic Pot for my daughter for the past 6 months and I find the magazine a smart way to keep a four year old busybody really busy.

The magazine comes with a lot of freebies too. On subscription and subsequent renewals a free gift is sent. Each issue comes with free stuff like stickers, tattoos, height chart and stationery. Kids love these free gifts and this alone is enough to get children interested in Magic Pot. Magic Pot is available in all leading book stores and news agents and each issue costs 15 INR.



The content is certainly not monotonous and has lots of variety. Again, this is a plus to retain the attention of today’s youngsters who seem to always need something new. There are stories, picture strips, plenty of puzzles, stories from Indian culture, coloring, contests and poems.

The stories are written in easy to follow simple language with meanings for long and hard words. Most of the stories have an underlying moral and reinforce good habits and responsible living. Do it yourself activities like spotting the differences, find your way, join the dots and others are aimed at improving the child’s skills and each puzzle comes with a small box hinting skills acquired through the activity.

My daughter always gets excited when a new issue of Magic Pot arrives and she just can’t rest till she has heard every story and done all the puzzles. I find this a good alternative to watching television or sitting in front of the computer.

On the whole I would rate Magic Pot as educational and entertaining for Nursery kids. But I am a bit disappointed with the poetry section of Magic Pot. Though not in all issues, I have come across some poems with absolutely no meaning.

Another engaging highlight of Magic Pot is the coloring contest for kids and story contest for parents and teachers. Though these are good ways to encourage readers, I do feel that coloring contest is not appropriate for all age groups. There are many kids who just don’t like coloring but are too good at puzzles. Changing contests for each issue would have suited the magazine more than having monotonous coloring challenges which are hard to judge with so much variation in reader’s age.

On the whole Magic Pot is a quality English publication for children with tremendous potential to enhance skills and at the same time engage kids in interesting activity.
